There is no substitute for living and studying in a foreign country if one wants to gain
in-depth knowledge of another culture's customs, people, and language. GSLL offers the following study abroad opportunities for our students:
Study Abroad in Regensburg, Germany
This year 14 CU students are studying in Bavaria on CU’s exchange with the University of Regensburg. A city of approximately 150,000 inhabitants, Regensburg is known for its beautiful setting on the banks of the Danube. Around 90 AD a Roman fort was erected near Regensburg, and in 179 AD “Castra Regina” was founded here during the reign of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Sights in Regensburg include the famous Stone Bridge (Steinerne Brücke) from the twelfth century, as well as Regensburg’s cathedral, which dates from the fourteenth century and is the most important Gothic structure in Bavaria. Many students on the CU exchange live in dormitories in the heart of the historic city center, close to shops, restaurants, and cafes and an easy commute to the university. Now in its thirty-eighth year, the exchange offers students a wide variety of course offerings, from intermediate and advanced German language courses to regular university courses taken by German university students. Students can receive credit toward a German major or minor, toward majors and minors in other subject areas, and for CU core and general elective requirements. Students are eligible for financial aid while they are on the exchange, and scholarships are also available. Program director Steve Uppendahl (himself a Regensburg exchange alum) directs the program on-site, and his duties include arranging housing, giving students academic advising, and organizing excursions to cities such as Vienna and Weimar.

Study Abroad in Berlin, Germany
The Study Abroad Office has approved the German Program’s proposal to offer CU students a summer study abroad option in Berlin at the Freie Universität Berlin Internationale Sommer Universität (FUBiS). FUBiS offers all levels of German language, in addition to German culture and literature courses taught in either German or English. Two summer terms (June to mid-July and mid-July to mid-August) are offered, and students may enroll in either or both terms. Students enrolling in both summer terms will be able to spend the equivalent of almost a semester in Berlin. We expect to begin offering the program in summer 2008, with applications due in the spring. For more information, contact Ann Schmiesing (Ann.Schmiesing@Colorado.Edu).
Study Abroad in St. Petersburg, Russia
Every summer Russian students have the opportunity to take a six-week study abroad trip to St. Petersburg, for intensive Russian language classes. The trip also includes visits to palaces, museums, churches, concerts, operas and ballet performances. Contact Artemi Romanov (e-mail: Artemi.Romanov@colorado.edu) about the St.Petersburg program. Please also check the website at http://studyabroad.colorado.edu/.
In summer 2007 Artemi Romanov took eight GSLL students to St. Petersburg, Russia, for the 6-week summer program at St. Petersburg State University. The annual summer programs in St. Petersburg began in 1997 and more than 120 CU students participated to date. This time Artemi led a small group and one of the nicest ever in terms of student interest and motivation.
The goal of the program is to offer beginning, intermediate and advanced students of Russian a well-balanced program of intensive language and cultural studies in an immersion setting. Combining rigorous language courses with an enriching cultural program of lectures and local excursions in St. Petersburg, one of the worlds most culturally and historically interesting cities, helped to achieve this goal.
Students visited over 20 museums, including the Hermitage, the Russian museum, Peter and Paul’s Fortress, Tretiakov Gallery, Petergof palace, Pushkin’s museum, Repin’s Penaty, Usupov’s palace and others. We attended 15 night events: operas, ballets, classical music concerts and choirs, including glorious productions of Prokofiev’s ballet “Romeo and Juliet” and Borodin’s opera “Prince Igor” in Mariinsky Theater.
In addition to language classes and extensive cultural program in St. Petersburg students visited Moscow, Novgorod and went on a three-day cruise to the historic islands of Valaam and Konevets on Ladoga Lake.
