Fulbright Teaching Assistantship Grant
German major Stefanie Gibbs, who graduated from CU in May 2007, and German minor Jessica Spangler, who graduated from CU in August 2007, have received Fulbright Teaching Assistantship Grants to Germany. Congratulations to both of them!
Stephanie sent the following note and photographs in October of 2007:
“While writing my Fulbright project proposal over a year ago, I outlined the activities I felt would provide me with the best international learning experience. Of course, I unintentionally restricted my proposal to endeavors with which I was familiar. During the past ten weeks, however, I've encountered an incredible assortment of experiences far exceeding my limited proposal. Each moment offers me another opportunity to explore the unfamiliar.
Not only do I struggle to contribute to discussions about literary theory and travel narratives in my university seminar, but I also joined a trio consisting of cello, flute, and Hackbrett that plays Bach and Mozart for several hours each week. Rather than limiting myself to the many incredible sights of Munich and the Isar valley, I organized and just returned from a wonderful trip through the Moselle Valley. Using my student pass to book reduced opera and theater performances opens up further possibilities to absorb the culture that surrounds me. Moreover, I've realized that even emerging from the subway is a learning experience in reading maps at the very least. My time as a Fulbright grantee has not simply broadened my options for educational engagement but has increased my willingness to participate in many approaches to learning. I am excited to learn things I never expected to learn and look forward to the opportunities the next eight months will bring.”
Johanna Rübsam is currently in Villach, Austria, where she is the new English Language Teaching Assistant at the St. Martin Gymnasium. She received this one year position through the Fulbright Commission and will be working in the school until the end of May. In her spare time, she will be practicing her trombone, taking auditions for the trombone positions in orchestras throughout Europe, traveling, and improving her grasp of the German language and Austrian culture.
Johanna graduated from CU summa cum laude in spring 2007 with a thesis titled "A Nietzschean Perspective on Schoenberg." She minored in German Studies and was the College of Music Outstanding Music Graduate for 2007.
Goethe Club Scholarship
Congratulations to Chell Mann, double major in German and Philosophy, who won the Goethe Club Scholarship for travel to Germany this past summer. Chell is currently working on a senior thesis on Kafka and interpretation theory.
Chell writes:
“Thanks to the generous support that I received from the Goethe Club of Denver, I was able to travel throughout Germany for almost two months this past summer, 2007. While there, I visited a total of thirteen German cities, made a number of new friends, spoke a lot of German, drank good German beer, and had, in short, a fantastic time. I found Germany to be both lovely and exciting as well as hip. I look forward to visiting again (or maybe even living there) in the future. I would like to thank the Goethe Club again for their truly generous support. Thank you.”
