Waffle Day 2006

Scandinavian Club's annual Waffle Day 2006 Club President, Jen Newell (recipient of the Gunnell Thorsin-Hamm Memorial Scholarship, now studying at the University of Uppsala) and Tracey Sands cooking and serving waffles to some of the many visitors who dropped by the UMC to enjoy a classic Scandinavian waffle with whipped cream and strawberry jam.

Maslenitsa

In April the Russian Program sponsored a Maslenitsa festival. Maslenitsa is an early spring festival originating from ancient pagan rituals meant to summon the return of the sun and symbolically bring an end to winter. Students from the Russian Fairytales class created effigy dolls for the Maslenitsa festivities, and hosted - and competed in - various traditional games, such as the "Spoon and Egg Race," tug-o-war, the "Bliny Toss," and the ever-popular bliny-eating contest.
