In spring 2004 our Russian major Merici Vinton got selected for a prestigious State Department internship at the U.S. embassy in Moscow. Merici spent four months, April-July 2004, working in the political military department of the U.S. embassy. Here are the excerpts from her Moscow letters:

“Last night I attended my first reception at the Spaso House (where the Ambassador lives). It was for the NATO Secretary General, so there were various people from all over in attendance (many military, many DCMs (the #2 ranking person in an Embassy-our DCM is the one who likes my "pepto bismol" shoes), and then the American Embassy employees (amboffs--yep, and us in political are poloffs)). It is basically a schmoozing event (yes, that would be "schmoozing with the muckity mucks" or maybe it's "muckin yourself around").

So, I am thrown into it--and had a great time. I went in wanting to know one thing (the status of russian troop withdrawal from georgia) and found it out. I spent 45 mins talking to the Georgian DCM (along with the norwegian dcm). All I can say is-thank heavens I wanted to write an honor's thesis on NATO---because I knew little about this topic, but when the topic switched to NATO I could hold my own...And basically that was the night--just talking to various people and having a great time.
