This year we had a change of the guards at our headquarters. Professor Thomas Hollweck, who chaired our department for four challenging years, stepped down. Thomas ably steered our multicultural boat through rough waters. The continuing decline in financial support for public higher education in Colorado resulted in painful budget cuts that affected all departments at CU, including GSLL. The department has lost a quarter of its funds for administrative support, and this resulted in the departure of our administrative assistant Karen Hawley, whom we miss greatly.
We have experienced a significant reduction in financial support for our undergraduate enhancement and outreach activities.  Even in these difficult times, Professor Hollweck, along with our colleagues from the Department of Comparative Literature, managed to obtain an authorization for a senior hire and launched a successful search. Professor Davide Stimilli from Northwestern University was selected and accepted our tenured position. Professor Stimilli will join the ranks of GSLL and Comparative Literature in Fall 2005 after completing his year-long research in Europe.
Greetings from our old McKenna building, the GSLL command center for dissemination of German, Russian, Swedish, Norwegian and Hebrews languages, literatures and cultures in the state of Colorado!
